Michelle Musandinyoze,[email protected]Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited (Zimpapers) is today hosting an Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse Indaba for schools at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre, Hall 3, in Bulawayo.The event, which aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, has been attended by pupils from 31 secondary schools.
It seeks to warn young people about the negative effects of drug abuse, such as addiction.In an interview, Ingutsheni Central Hospital Clinical Director, Dr Wellington Ranga, said that although many people turn to drugs as a way to escape their problems, it is not easy to stop using drugs once one starts.He also urged people not to judge those who struggle with addiction, as it is often a result of deeper societal issues.“People should not think that those who use drugs are weak or have problems,” said Dr Ranga. “Even those without problems can get caught up in drug use.
We need to take responsibility for our actions and stop glorifying drug use.”Dr Ranga also challenged the idea that family problems are a valid excuse for drug use, stating that no family is perfect and everyone has their own issues.“We cannot use our family problems as an excuse to abuse drugs.
