The Zimbabwean government is implementing a nationwide rollout of Point-of-Sale (POS) machines at all police roadblocks to digitise spot fine payments and reduce corruption. The system aims to ensure that all fine payments are processed electronically and deposited directly into government accounts in real time, eliminating the need for cash handling by officers. To address internet coverage challenges in remote areas, authorities are partnering with Starlink to provide stable, high-speed satellite internet, enabling the POS machines to function seamlessly across the country.
This reform is part of a broader digital transformation strategy that includes modernising traffic law enforcement and supporting Zimbabwe’s shift toward a cashless economy.[youtube]The plan is being coordinated by the Ministries of Home Affairs and ICT, and is supported by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, which is also developing offline-compatible POS devices for use when network connectivity is temporarily down.
