Trust FreddyHerald CorrespondentALL is set for Heroes Day commemorations today, with President Mnangagwa presiding over the main event at the National Heroes Acre in Harare while Ministers for Provincial Affairs and Devolution will preside over the proceedings at provincial venues across the country.Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe yesterday said all was in place for the commemorations after visiting the National Heroes Acre to assess preparations.He was accompanied by Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Monica Mavhunga, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Torerai Moyo, among other senior Government officials.“As you can see, we are here to do the final touch-ups,” Minister Kazembe said. “We have also done rehearsals with those who are going to receive awards and those who are going to receive national flags, on behalf of those who were declared national heroes by His Excellency. So we have just done some final touches and everything is set.
We are ready for tomorrow (today).”He further confirmed that all logistical arrangements had been finalised, with transport secured for the families of national heroes.“All the widows, the relatives of the late national heroes have all been invited.
Most of them have already come to Harare and they have been provided with accommodation and transport, so I can safely say to our citizens that everything is set for tomorrow (today).”Three individuals will also receive medals for their heroic contributions, and five families will be presented with national flags in honour of the five posthumously declared National Heroes.The commemorations, which thousands of people are expected to attend, will be followed by Defence Forces Day celebrations tomorrow at Rufaro Stadium.The President is again expected to lead the main celebrations.“We hope to see a bumper crowd here so that we can celebrate the national heroes’ day tomorrow. And the same will also be happening throughout the country in the 10 provinces of our country.“We do have entertainment. I am aware that Suluman Chimbetu is one of the performers, and he will be singing some liberation songs.
I know he has a couple from his father.“And then, on Tuesday, we will be celebrating the National Defence Forces day at Rufaro Stadium, as well as in the other nine provinces of our country.”President Mnangagwa is today expected to present national flags to the families of Cde Benjamin Burombo, Brigadier-General (Rtd) Lameck Francisco Mutanda, Cde John Mbedzi, and Cde Jairos Jiri, who were posthumously declared National Heroes.He is also expected to give awards to three exceptional individuals, including Prof Vladimir Gennadyevich Shubin, a key Soviet ally during the liberation era, who will receive the Zimbabwe International Friendship Award.Shubin once served as secretary of the Soviet Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee and led the Africa section of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s International Department.Inasem-L Chitutu, a teenager hailed as a hero after rescuing two children from a burning house in Bindura, will also be awarded the Silver Cross of Zimbabwe for his bravery.Dr Madeline Nyamwanza, Zimbabwe’s first female African medical doctor, will also receive the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award for her contributions to human capital development in the country.Heroes Day is marked in honour of the gallant men and women who sacrificed their lives during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, while paying tribute to those who contributed to the country’s post-independence development in various sectors, as well as individuals who displayed heroism in their communities.In Mashonaland East, celebrations will take place at the Provincial Heroes Acre in Marondera, with a music gala in Hwedza to follow the Defence Forces Day commemorations.Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo said preparations were complete and public enthusiasm was high.In Masvingo, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira is also expected to lead celebrations scheduled for the provincial Heroes Acre .Matabeleland North will mark Heroes Day at the Lupane Provincial Heroes Acre and Defence Forces Day at Somhlolo Stadium.Mashonaland West’s main celebrations will be in Chinhoyi, with the refurbished Provincial Heroes Acre as the focal point.Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland Central, Christopher Magomo, will also lead celebrations as the whole nation unites in honouring fallen heroes and heroinesShare on FacebookPost on XFollow usSave Originally published on Zimbabwe Herald All Zim News All Zim News is a central hub for all things Zimbabwean, curating news from across the country so no story is missed.
