Zim eyes Africa’s sole spot at 2026 U23 Baseball World Cup
Story by Mthokozisi DubeTHE Zimbabwe Under-23 baseball team has left for Boksburg, South Africa, to compete in the African World Cup Qualifiers, a five-day tournament running until November 2.The competition provides a crucial platform for Team Zimbabwe to demonstrate their talent and represent the nation on the continental stage. Teams will face off in a round-robin format, with the overall winner securing Africa’s sole berth at the 2026 Under-23 Baseball World Cup, scheduled for next September in Europe.Eldon Mudzingwa, vice president of the Zimbabwe Baseball Association, expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation.“Team Zimbabwe has been preparing very well for this particular tournament, which is both the African Championship and the U23 African Boys Championship.
The winner will get the sole ticket to represent Africa at next year’s World Cup in Europe.“We started preparing in January and have held three to four training camps. It is a balanced team drawn from all provinces, with a few players who have already featured for the senior men’s team. We believe this experience will give us an edge,” he said.Zimbabwe join hosts South Africa and Benin in the battle for the single World Cup slot.
