By A Correspondent– Voters head to the polls today in Chikomba, Chiredzi, and Marondera, where six candidates are contesting local council by-elections triggered by party recalls and the deaths of sitting councillors.

InChikomba RDC Ward 10, the race is betweenMuchenje Tawanda (Independent)andMukandi Tafadzwa (ZANU-PF).Chiredzi Ward 4sees a contest betweenPhillies Austin (ZANU-PF)andMacheke Joseph (Independent).InMarondera Ward 6, the candidates areTongawashe Fion (ZANU-PF)andZinyenge Richard (Independent).

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says it is fully prepared for the polls, with ZEC Deputy Chairperson Rodney Kiwa confirming on Friday that all logistics and personnel are in place.

“These by-elections are being held following recalls by sponsoring political parties and the deaths of sitting councillors. All material and human resources have been mobilised to ensure a smooth voting process,” Kiwa told reporters in Harare.

He said a budget ofZiG$9 millionhas been set aside to facilitate the elections across the three wards.

Polling stations are distributed as follows:

ZEC has called on registered voters in the affected areas to participate peacefully and uphold democratic values during the process.
