Harare :The Politburo of Zanu PF has officially sanctioned the co-option of prominent businessman Dr. Paul Tungwarara into the party’s Central Committee. This pivotal decision was reached during a Politburo meeting on Wednesday at the party headquarters.
Following the high-level deliberations, Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa confirmed the development, underscoring the significance of the Politburo’s resolution. “I am glad to announce that Cde Tungwarara has now been accepted as a member of the Central Committee of Zanu PF. I want to congratulate him” stated Cde Mutsvangwa.
The escalating dispute was formally elevated to the Politburo, recognized as the party’s supreme decision-making body outside of its congresses. In December Cde Mutsvangwa had indicated that the matter would ultimately be resolved at the highest level. Announcing the Politburo’s final verdict, Cde Mutsvangwa lauded the Manicaland leadership for their selection, drawing parallels with other recent appointments.

“I would like to congratulate Manicaland Province for this selection which has found favour with the Politburo in the same vein as the selection of Cde (Kudakwashe) Tagwirei by Harare Province and became a member of the Central Committee” he remarked. He further elaborated on the strategic importance of such appointments describing them as an “injection of new blood into the party, young business people who have fresh ideas about how to generate wealth for the country, how to run the economy. Their inclusion into Zanu PF leadership will ensure that we get fresh ideas as to how we can attune the party to the demands of a modern fourth industrial revolution country” he added.
The Central Committee, as the party’s most influential organ between congresses holds substantial political sway. Tungwarara, widely recognized for his close association with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, sees his co-option as a significant consolidation of his burgeoning influence within Zanu PF’s upper echelons. The Politburo’s intervention effectively resolves months of uncertainty, which had laid bare divisions between national and provincial leadership regarding the interpretation of party regulations. This decisive action also preempts a potentially destabilizing standoff in Manicaland, particularly pertinent ahead of future internal party processes.
