Zambia’s Mwale elected African Telecommunications Union Secretary-General

Zambia has secured a key leadership position in Africa’s telecommunications sector after Engineer Kezias Kazuba Mwale was elected Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) for the 2027–2030 term. The election took place during the 7th Ordinary Session of the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries held in Abuja, Nigeria, from July 23 to 24. In a statement on Saturday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Principal Public Relations Officer, Eva Hatontola Chanda, said Mwale emerged successful against candidates from Cameroon, Congo-Brazzaville, South Africa and Tunisia.

She said his candidature had been endorsed by Southern African Development Community (SADC) Information and Communications Technologies Ministers before the election. “The election reflected the confidence African member states had placed in Zambia’s candidate and underscored the country’s growing influence in regional and international affairs,” Chanda said. She said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation coordinated Zambia’s diplomatic campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Technology and Science and Zambian missions abroad through engagements with ATU member states and strategic partners.

Mwale brings more than 23 years of experience in the information and communication technology sector and has served the ATU for 14 years, most recently as Director for Spectrum. During his tenure, he helped expand the Union’s membership from 39 to 52 member states and contributed to initiatives on 5G spectrum optimisation, satellite resource management and continental digital programmes. The government said it was confident that his experience and leadership would help strengthen the ATU and advance Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
