Zambia to host 2026 International Mine Rescue…

Zambia has been selected as the first African country to host the 2026 International Mine Rescue Competition (IMRC), a prestigious global event aimed at improving emergency response and safety standards in the mining industry. The competition, scheduled for April 25 to May 6, 2026, will be co-hosted by Kansanshi Mine Plc in Solwezi District and Mopani Copper Mines in Mufulira District. Zambia Chamber of Mines Deputy Chief Executive Officer Talent Ng’andwe described the event as a historic milestone, noting that it will be the first time the international competition is held on the African continent.

“Zambia’s successful bid to host the competition demonstrates growing confidence in the country’s mining sector and its ability to host major international events,” Mr Ng’andwe said. He disclosed that about 500 delegates from eleven countries are expected to attend, bringing together mine rescue professionals, safety experts, and industry leaders from across the world. He added that the event will showcase Zambia’s mining expertise and strengthen collaboration with international partners in mine safety and emergency response.

Mr Ng’andwe further stated that preparations are progressing well, with site inspections and coordination meetings underway. ZANIS reports that Four Zambian mining companies namely Konkola Copper Mines, Lubambe Copper Mines, Mopani Copper Mines, and NFCA-Chambishi, are expected to participate. During a visit to Solwezi, Mr Ng’andwe checked on preparations at Kansanshi Mine Plc, one of the key host sites.

First Quantum Minerals Group Safety Manager Eric Cousins, emphasized the competition’s role in raising emergency rescue standards. “The competition is aimed at raising emergency rescue standards in the mining industry through practical drills and knowledge sharing among participating teams,” he said. Kansanshi Mine Plc Superintendent for Emergency Services Christopher Hale, confirmed readiness to co-host the event.
