A YOUNG farmer from Karoi, Munyaradzi Marara, is emerging as a shining example of how agriculture can be a powerful tool for youth empowerment, economic transformation and social stability, in line with National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and the Government’s thrust on Village Business Units (VBUs) and Rural Agriculture 8.0.
Marara, a member of the Vapostori4ED, has planted 20 hectares of maize this season, demonstrating that with focus, discipline and hard work, young people can turn agriculture into a viable and sustainable business.
Speaking in an interview, Marara said he deliberately chose farming as a pathway to escape poverty while also steering clear of the growing scourge of drug and substance abuse affecting many youths across the country.

“Agriculture is not just about food production; it is about restoring discipline, purpose and dignity among young people. When youths are busy in the fields, there is no time for drugs or crime,” he said.
Marara’s farming enterprise dovetails with NDS2, which prioritises inclusive economic growth, food security, youth participation and rural industrialisation.

His story also mirrors the objectives of Rural Agriculture 8.0, which seeks to modernise agriculture, promote productivity and integrate young people into value chains.
He said the establishment of Village Business Units would go a long way in unlocking opportunities for youths in farming communities such as Karoi.
“Government must expedite the rollout of Village Business Units in growth points and towns like Karoi. VBUs will give young farmers access to markets, storage, processing facilities and business support, which are critical for sustainability,” said Marara.
Marara believes that patriotism, discipline and a strong work ethic are key ingredients for youth success in agriculture.
“If we love our country and commit ourselves to productive work, especially in agriculture, we can rise above poverty and drug abuse. Zimbabwe has enough land and opportunities for youths to thrive,” he said.
His success story stands as a call to action for young Zimbabweans to embrace agriculture as a business, not a last resort, and to contribute meaningfully to toll development.
As Government continues to roll out youth-focused empowerment programmes under NDS2, Marara’s journey underscores the transformative power of agriculture in building resilient rural economies, creating employment and safeguarding the future of the nation’s youths.
