As rising cement prices continue to squeeze small construction businesses, a new entrepreneurship programme is offering young builders and brickmakers the opportunity to reduce production costs, strengthen their businesses and embrace more sustainable building methods. The nine-month Circular Cement Youth Entrepreneurship Programme aims to support 100 young entrepreneurs by combining technical training, business development and innovative construction techniques developed through research at Stellenbosch University. The programme has been developed by Fix Forward and Impact Hub Cape Winelands in collaboration with Stellenbosch University.

It is designed for B-BBEE candidates under the age of 35 who already operate building or brickmaking businesses and addresses challenges including rising material costs, youth unemployment and the need for more sustainable construction practices. Participants will learn how to use suitable waste-derived materials as partial alternatives to conventional cement, allowing them to lower production costs while producing more environmentally friendly building materials. In addition to technical training, the programme offers one-on-one business coaching, production support, access to equipment and opportunities to build industry networks.

Josh Cox, chief executive officer of Fix Forward, said the initiative was about translating research into practical business opportunities. โ€œWeโ€™re taking innovative research out of the laboratory and putting it into the hands of builders and brickmakers who can use it to strengthen their businesses,โ€ he said. โ€œWhen entrepreneurs have access to the right knowledge, practical support and market opportunities, theyโ€™re better equipped to grow sustainable businesses that create value within their communities.โ€
