There is a severe weather warning for parts of KZN. South Africans can expect cool winter weather with cloudy conditions and scattered coastal showers on Tuesday, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS). SAWS says partly cloudy and cool conditions will prevail over the central and eastern parts of the country, while the east and south coasts are expected to remain cloudy, with isolated to scattered rain and showers.

The forecast follows a spell of windy and cold weather over the southern parts of the country, with a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds and waves remaining in place for the south-west coast of the Western Cape until Tuesday. Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) said disaster management teams across the province have been placed on high alert following updated SAWS warnings for severe weather. According to the department in a statement released on Monday, central KwaZulu-Natal is under a Level 2 warning for disruptive rain on Tuesday, while coastal areas are under a more severe Level 4 warning from Tuesday through to Wednesday night.

The department warned that heavy downpours could cause localised flooding, waterlogged roads, difficult driving conditions, structural damage, swollen rivers and the possible displacement of residents in vulnerable communities. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, urged residents in affected areas to exercise extreme caution, while disaster management teams will closely monitor areas prone to weather-related incidents. Residents can expect partly cloudy and cool conditions across central and eastern South Africa with cloudy skies along the east and south coasts. There will also be isolated to scattered rain and showers in coastal areas, with dry conditions across much of the country’s interior. Winds easing over the Western Cape after the recent cold front, although coastal conditions may remain rough Residents travelling through affected parts of KwaZulu-Natal are advised to monitor official weather updates and avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers.
