Dzivarasekwa — Zimbabwe will mark this year’s World Tourism Day with a bold and symbolic celebration in Dzivarasekwa, one of Harare’s oldest and most vibrant townships. Under the global theme of “Tourism and Inclusive Growth”, the spotlight will shine on township tourism as a powerful driver of local economic development, cultural expression, and community empowerment. The commemorations come in the aftermath of highly successful Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo 2025, in Mutare.
Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the expo, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon.Barbara Rwodzi, emphasized the growing importance of township tourism in Zimbabwe’s broader tourism revival strategy. “Township tourism is where authentic Zimbabwean stories live,” said the Minister. “By bringing World Tourism Day celebrations to Dzivarasekwa, we affirm that tourism belongs to every Zimbabwean – not just the high-end lodges or national parks, but also the street corner vendor, the sculptor in a backyard studio, the mbira player performing in a shebeen.” Dzivarasekwa (commonly known as “DZ”) has long been known for its rich cultural identity, strong community spirit, and grassroots creativity. As the host location for World Tourism Day 2025, DZ will transform into a celebration hub featuring: Live performances from local artists and cultural groups Heritage walks and guided tours of local attractions Storytelling and art exhibitions by community creatives Youth entrepreneurship stalls and township innovations The celebrations are also designed to create visibility for community-based tourism and showcase how high-impact, low-cost interventions can uplift local economies.
