The South African Weather Services (Saws) has issued a Yellow Level 2 severe thunderstorm for parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday. The agency reported that severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail are expected over the province. This is due to a surface trough over the central interior of the country, resulting in scattered showers and thundershowers.
“Some of these thundershowers are expected to become severe over KZN on Tuesday and are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lighting and large amounts of small hail that can result in minor impacts,” Saws said. Saws has instructed residents in affected areas to take caution and avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas, as these may be susceptible to flooding. “Avoid outdoor activities as lightning, hail and flooding may result in injuries and death,” Saws said.
“If possible, stay indoors, stay clear of windows. Shelter pets and cover vehicles. Move livestock and cars to safe, sheltered areas as there may be flying debris.”
