The biking community is in mourning after a spate of fatal crashes claimed the lives of seven motorcyclists on Pietermaritzburg roads in the past month, raising alarm among biker clubs and associations over road safety and driver awareness. The latest deaths involved two bikers who died in separate accidents in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday and Friday last week, leaving the local biking community reeling. President of the Fearless Motorcycle Club, Carlo Peters, said the biking community had lost several members from different clubs in less than a month from road accidents.
“We are mourning the loss of several bikers from different clubs. We always try to spread the message that all road users are equal and deserve respect on the roads,” said Peters. He said several factors contributed to motorcycle accidents, including poor road conditions and reckless driving by motorists.
“If we hit a pothole, we can be seriously injured. Motorists also do not slow down, even when they can see bikers approaching. People do not pay attention to other road users, and that can become fatal, especially when drivers go through red traffic lights,” he said.

Peters also conveyed condolences to the family of Jaryd Anthony, who died following a collision in Prestbury on Friday morning. Jaryd’s father, Clive Anthony, said his son had worked for the Msunduzi Municipality Traffic Department for many years. Jaryd’s best friend, Darren Bode, described him as more than just a club member.
“On Friday, we lost more than just a club member — we lost a brother, a best friend, a family man and one of the realest souls to ever stand beside us,” said Bode. Jaryd was the kind of man who left a mark on everyone he met. He was a devoted father, an incredible partner and a loyal friend. “His love for bikes, bikers, cars and the open road was not just a passion; it was who he was.”
