Malawi Queens legends Peace Chawinga-Kalua and Mary Waya are among five local coaches high performance consultant Debbie Fuller has shortlisted for the positions of head coach and assistant coach of the national netball team. The former Queens tacticians alongside Jane Chimaliro, Joana Kachilika and Garvey Nyondo are currently attached to the Queens’ training camp in Blantyre where they are undergoing assessment. Besides identifying the head coach and assistant coach, Fuller is also expected to name a strength and conditioning expert as well as a physiotherapist as part of the backroom staff.
The New Zealander initially called up 44 players for camp and has since trimmed the squad to 27 as she prepares the Malawi National Netball Team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland scheduled for July 23 to August 2. She is using the ongoing training sessions to assess the players and evaluate the shortlisted coaches. Netball Association of Malawi general secretary Yamikani Kauma-Khungwa yesterday said in an interview that the consultant will conclude the assessment process this week before announcing the backroom staff next week.
She said: “These coaches are already working with the consultant. She said: “Each player will have set targets. While she is away, the backroom staff will continue assessing the players.

“The team manager will send daily updates to Fuller. When she returns, the consultant will once again asses the players to find out if what she was getting is true reflection of the players fitness.” Meanwhile, Waya, who was on Saturday inducted into Malawi National Council of Sports Hall of Fame at Malawi Sport Awards in Salima, said she remains committed to contributing to the growth of netball. “I am happy to be part of this.
When I got the invitation to attend the assessment, I felt obliged to show up.” Fuller is an accomplished coach with over 25 years of experience in netball. She served as assistant coach for the New Zealand Silver Ferns from 2018 to 2025.
