The vandalism of several 5 000-litre storage tanks installed to address the ongoing water crisis in Greater Indaleni, Richmond, has been “demoralising”, said Mayor Melikhaya Ngcongo, who also suggested the actions were politically motivated. Those who differ with us decide to vandalise infrastructure that is meant to help the community, just to portray an image that councillors are not delivering. “I will always stand by our councillors and support them when there are stumbling blocks in service delivery,” he said.

Affected areas include ward 1 (Magoda), ward 2 (Sgcakini), ward 6 (Smozomeni) and ward 7 (Maswazini). He said the tanks, which were installed last year as a temporary relief measure, were meant to assist residents during persistent water shortages. Ngcongo said the water crisis in the area had been ongoing for about three months.

“Generally, the water situation in this area is not stable. “While we are still busy with long-term interventions where residents will eventually receive water from their taps, we are providing temporary relief through 5 000-litre storage tanks,” he said. Ward councillor and chief whip Lungisani Ngubo said the existing water system was originally designed for a much smaller population.
