Residents of Howick West were left without water again this week after a series of burst pipes disrupted supply for days, renewing frustration over ageing infrastructure and repeated delays in repairs. The latest disruption followed a burst pipe near Sparks Road over the weekend, which left many households without water until late on Tuesday. Some residents said they woke up to dry taps again on Tuesday, after another pipe burst on Rangeview Road, while areas around Symmonds Vlei in Howick were also affected.

According to residents, delays in repairs were due to the unavailability of machinery needed to dig up the damaged pipes. They said an excavator required for the repairs was only made available on Tuesday, prolonging the outage. Residents said the situation has become a regular occurrence, with some claiming they can go days without water while waiting for repairs to be completed. Several residents said they reported the burst pipes soon after they occurred but were told there were no tractor loader backhoes (TLBs) or excavators available to assist with repairs. They said the delays leave them scrambling to store water whenever supply is restored, fearing it could be cut again at any time. In January, residents in Howick West, particularly along Cosmo Road and Sparks Road, raised similar concerns after repeated pipe bursts left them without water for more than a week.
