WATCH | Women’s cricket takes centre stage in PMB

Women’s cricket is taking centre stage in Pietermaritzburg this Women’s Month, with the KwaZulu-Natal Inland Cricket Union hosting the Women’s Tuskers Premier League (TPL) this weekend. The tournament features four teams — Cobra Kings, Viper Yorkers, Payton Power Heaters and Mamba Forces — with players selected through a draft. KZN Inland Cricket Union CEO Jason Sathiaseelan said the tournament was aimed at creating more opportunities for women to participate in cricket while helping grow the women’s game in the region.

We’ve got four teams. We invited a host of females to enter and participate, and then we conducted a draft to place players into the four teams. Eight matches are being played over the weekend, with the tournament starting on Friday and three matches scheduled for Saturday.

The final round-robin match will be played on Sunday morning, followed by a semi-final at lunchtime. The tournament will culminate in the final at 2.30pm at the Oval. Sathiaseelan said the tournament reflected the significant growth of women’s cricket in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas.

He said the growth was particularly encouraging given that there was little to no women’s cricket being played in the area a few years ago. A few years ago, there was no women’s cricket taking place in the Pietermaritzburg area.
