Snared dog Vix defies the odds as recovery continues months after amputation months after a carefree walk turned into a fight for survival, Vix the long-haired German shepherd has adapted well to three legs and fighting off infections like a champ. Vix disappeared in October after chasing a guinea fowl during an off-lead walk and darting into thick bramble, later discovered to be riddled with wire snares. A desperate three-day search followed before he was found motionless, his leg crushed beyond saving near the uMngeni River Conservancy, Howick.
Months later, Vix’s owner, Lisa van der Spuy, says his recovery — after losing his right hind leg — has been extraordinary, despite serious physical and emotional setbacks. Since undergoing surgery on October 26, she said his physical healing has exceeded expectations. “His wound healed exceptionally well.
The stitches were removed on November 10, and he was already walking well,” she said. While he initially struggled to climb into the car, his determination was clear. He’d put his front legs up on the open boot and wait for me to lift his back end.

I even bought a car ramp, but he refused to use it. However, complications soon followed. Vix developed a bladder infection, an ear infection, severe halitosis and uncharacteristic aggression.
“I was really stressed about the aggression and the unbearable breath stench,” Van der Spuy said. “It got to the point where I was considering having him put to sleep because he was a risk to others in the home.”
