The Currie Cup remains one of South African rugby’s most important proving grounds despite the rise of international competitions, and Sharks coachMike Vowlesbelieves this year’s campaign will play a pivotal role inshaping the club’s future. While silverware remains the ultimate goal, Vowles says the competition is equally valuable for rebuilding the careers of experienced players, accelerating the development of emerging talent and strengthening the Sharks’ depth for the United Rugby Championship.
“In the South African rugby landscape, it’s still a hugely prestigious competition. If you look at the resources invested in it, it’s clear that many unions place a high value on it. “From a Sharks perspective, we’ve done a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure we have a competitive squad and the resources to challenge strongly in the competition.
“As a club, it’s a tournament we hold in very high regard.” Vowles said the Sharks have three clear objectives for this year’s campaign. “Firstly, we want to be competitive because that’s the only way to develop players. If you’re not competitive, it’s difficult to get the best out of a group.
