Picture: Lego Long gone are the days when playing withLegomeant coming up with your own unique creation by simply combining the blocks in a creative way. Now theLegoGroup has unveiled what it calls a Smart Play system, using ‘Smart Bricks’ and ‘Smart Tags’.
The bricks now also feature a computer chip and combine with the tags to create a new way to play with Lego pieces. Legosaid it would provide a completely new way to enjoy its products. “Introducing the Lego Smart Play system, a new platform made of endlessly interactive Smart Bricks, Smart Tags, and Smart Minifigures, all connected to bring play to life like never before,” said Lego.
Of course, the new Smart Bricks can be wirelessly charged as having wires involved in the play would be completely out of the question. Not only will the bricks feature in-built lights but also emit sounds as well. “It also has a built-in accelerometer which knows how it is being moved through the air, and brings play to life in incredible ways,” says Lego.

The first set to feature this new technology will be a Star Wars-inspired offering from March 1. Those who buy Lego will know it doesn’t come cheap and the new Star Wars sets will start at R1,143 excluding VAT for a 473-piece package. The most expensive will come in at around R2,614 excluding VAT for a 962-piece set.
