Banyana controlled possession during the opening exchanges and carved out three promising opportunities inside the first 20 minutes, but a lack of composure in front of goal prevented them from taking an early lead.

Tanzania, meanwhile, were content to sit deep, defend in numbers and look for opportunities on the counter-attack. Although they struggled to sustain pressure, the East Africans showed flashes of danger whenever they broke forward. Their patience paid off in the 38th minute through a moment of individual brilliance from Türkiye-based forward Diana Msewa. Collecting the ball inside her own half, Msewa drove through the heart of the South African defence, skipped past several challenges and calmly slotted beyond goalkeeper Andile Dlamini to hand Tanzania a surprise lead.
