A Pietermaritzburg-based snake catcher’s hot week got hotter as he was called out to two feisty snake situations, one an angry spitting cobra and the second, a writhing black mamba. Local snake catcher Akil Ramsurran said the latest call-out came on Thursday afternoon near Lions Park, where a suspected spitting cobra had been spotted inside a house. When he arrived, the homeowners were visibly shaken.
Ramsurran said the snake had surprised them when the husband stepped into a spare room. Ramsurran explained that Mozambique spitting cobras are most active in the late afternoon and evenings, particularly during warm weather. He said, unlike many species, they do not need a hood to defend themselves and can spit venom accurately while keeping their heads low.
The snake spat into the man’s eyes when it felt threatened. Ramsurran said the family acted correctly by flushing the eyes thoroughly with water. “This is the best immediate response for both people and pets if venom gets into the eyes,” he said.

After searching the room, Ramsurran found the cobra coiled behind a beer bottle near the door. The snake was aggressive and repeatedly evaded capture before it was safely pinned and secured.
