Two women have been arrested after a body was brought into a Capitec branch in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal, allegedly during a dispute over a funeral policy claim. The incident caused panic among clients and staff after the deceased’s body was placed on the floor inside the branch earlier this week. A disturbing incident unfolded at Capitec Stanger on February 18, 2026, when a family, attempting to claim life insurance funds, was told they needed proof of death.

It remains unclear whether the body had previously been kept at a mortuary and how it was obtained. Police have since arrested two women believed to be family members.

They face charges of extortion, intimidation and public disturbance, and are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Police spokesperson Constable Siphesihle Myeni said preliminary reports indicated the family had taken out two funeral policies with the bank for their grandmother. “One policy was paid out, while the second was pending verification due to an unclear funeral parlour stamp,” he said. Myeni added that the deceased’s body had been taken to KwaDukuza Mortuary for further investigation.
