A pupil is in a critical condition after suffering a medical emergency and falling down a flight of stairs at a high school in Howick on Wednesday. Roland Robertson, spokesperson for Midlands EMS, said paramedics and advanced life support teams were dispatched to the school following reports of an unresponsive pupil. “On arrival, the patient was found in a critical and life-threatening condition, requiring urgent advanced medical intervention,” said Robertson.

He said that, due to the severity of the pupil’s condition, paramedics requested assistance from the Netcare 911 medical helicopter for rapid transport to an appropriate medical facility. The pupil was stabilised at the scene, placed on a manual ventilator and airlifted to a Level One trauma hospital for specialised treatment. Emergency services were assisted by Howick SAPS, Howick Law Enforcement and Knight Security Services, who secured the landing zone and helped with crowd control. The circumstances surrounding the medical emergency are not yet clear.
