The MK Party’s motion of no confidence in KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli was on Monday unsuccessful in the KZN Legislature. In its motion, the MK Party had in amongst others accused Ntuli of failing to create jobs and presiding over a corrupt government. During Monday’s sitting, 40 MPLs voted against the motion while MK Party and EFF MPLs declined to participate in the voting processes.
“This motion has failed and Honourable Ntuli therefore remains the Premier of KZN,” Provincial Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce, announced after the vote count. The MK Party, which has 37 out of KZN’s 80 seats, was during Monday’s debate on the motion, supported by the EFF – which has two seats in the KZN Legislature. The MK Party/EFF coalition needed a total of 41 votes.
Monday’s debate saw KZN government of provincial unity (GPU) parties close ranks around Ntuli. Out of the 40 GPU MPLs who participated in Monday’s debate, not a single voted in favour of the MK Party’s motion. Francois Rodgers, the Democratic Alliance (DA) province lead, said that they welcome the Legislature’s decision to reject the motion of no confidence against the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal. The decision to defeat this reckless motion reaffirms DA’s commitment to governance and economic growth in KZN.
