A Durban family of six was among the many families, friends, colleagues and teams who gathered at Midmar Dam on Saturday to take part in the 53rd Midmar Mile, keeping a cherished family tradition alive. For the family, the iconic open-water swim has long been a shared experience. They said their father had always swum the Midmar Mile, and over the years they joined him in the water.
Even after his passing, the tradition continues. This year saw Stephanie Lopes complete her 21st Midmar Mile, while Cole Schoeman took on the challenge for the very first time. Lopes was joined by her mother, Sue Edworthy, along with Layla Schoeman, Cole Schoeman, Hayley Schoeman and Andre Schoeman.
“We swim the Midmar Mile every year as a family,” said Lopes. “Since my dad passed away, we’ve kept the tradition going. We really enjoyed being back in the water again this year.” The family described the conditions as enjoyable, adding to the positive atmosphere on the day.

Among the standout swimmers was 89-year-old Dai Shultz, the oldest overall finisher, who said this year’s water conditions were far better than in previous swims. “My daughter and grandson convinced me to join them. They were already swimming it and thought I should give it a go too.”
