An 88-year-old woman was rushed to a clinic for treatment after suffering smoke inhalation when her home caught fire on Monday morning in Caluza, Pietermaritzburg. Her grandson Sbu Mthembu said he had left briefly to buy bread at a neighbour’s tuck shop when he was alerted that smoke was coming from the house. “When I got home, smoke had engulfed the entire house.

I went inside and managed to save my 88-year-old grandmother,” he said. He said the elderly woman was not in good condition and was taken to the nearest clinic for treatment. “This is an eight-room house, and we lost everything,” Mthembu said.

According to Mthembu, the fire is believed to have started in his sister’s bedroom, although the cause is unknown. “She [his sister] had left early in the morning to go to the clinic. We do not know how the fire started,” he said.

The family has appealed for assistance after losing all their belongings, including identity documents and other important documents. Another family member, Ntombizonke Mthembu, said she was at work when she received a call informing her that their family home was on fire. “I told my daughter to leave the clinic and rush home.

When she told me the house had burnt down, I asked my supervisor for permission to leave work. We are devastated and do not know what caused the fire,” she said.
