Motorists have been urged to avoid the N2 northbound before the EB Cloete Interchange in Durban after a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in which a vehicle was blown up on Monday evening. Emergency services and private security teams responded to the scene near Chesterville at about 7:27pm following reports of an explosion and an ongoing robbery. According to traffic alert group CF4U, the incident has caused major disruption on the northbound carriageway, with authorities warning drivers to stay away from the area until further notice.

ALS Paramedics confirmed they are on scene where the CIT vehicle was allegedly attacked and explosives used by suspects. Initial reports indicate that looting was in progress shortly after the blast. Traffic congestion is building up around the interchange, also known as the spaghetti junction, with vehicles being diverted as emergency crews secure the area.

“Paramedics arrived after SAPS had made the scene safe to find hundreds of members of public looting money on the ground. SAPS quickly dispersed the looters and Paramedics were shown to two security personnel who were in the vehicle at the time of the robbery. Paramedics assessed the two men, and one of them had sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of the explosion, and he was treated by ALS Paramedics.
