Vodacom Moçambique and Bayobab Zambia ton Saturday announced the strategic launch of a fibre optic interconnection at the Zambia–Mozambique border, marking an important milestone in Africa’s digital transformation journey. The event was attended by senior government representatives and key sector stakeholders from both countries. The partnership enhances cross-border connectivity and establishes a critical fibre route linking inland networks to submarine cable systems on Africa’s eastern and western coasts.
The interconnection will enable direct international connectivity to the 2Africa submarine cable system, strengthen network resilience and accelerate digital inclusion across Southern Africa. “This partnership consolidates Mozambique’s digital backbone and expands the capacity required to meet growing demand for reliable connectivity. “This interconnection is a game changer for Zambia and the region.

The project also reflects the Ambition 2030 vision of MTN Group to deliver leading digital solutions across Africa and reinforces Vodacom’s commitment to connect 260 million customers on the continent by 2030. Bayobab Zambia operates more than 7,100 km of fibre optic network nationwide and holds an International Network Licence issued by ZICTA, allowing it to carry cross-border capacity and support regional data flows.
