The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed a fatal collision this morning on the R510 between Thabazimbi and Northam. According toPolokwane Review, the crash, which happened near Amanda Mine in the Waterberg District around 06:10, involved a bakkie and a bus transporting schoolchildren. Departmental spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala says preliminary investigations suggest the bakkie was overtaking when it collided head-on with the bus.

The 58-year-old male driver of the bakkie sustained fatal injuries. One hundred and nine children sustained minor injuries. A total of 103 learners were taken to Thabazimbi Provincial Hospital, while six were transported to Amandelbult Mine Hospital for treatment.

Authorities have indicated that reckless driving is being investigated as a possible cause. Officials have reiterated a call for all road users, especially those transporting vulnerable passengers, to exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic regulations. “An investigation into the incident is ongoing and further updates will be provided as information becomes available,” says Taueatsoala.
