The United Party for National Development (UPND) has remembered its late former Vice President, Canicius Banda, as a gallant leader who served the party well.
Dr Banda, who died on Thursday, July 30, 2026, has been described by the UPND Media Director, Mark Simuuwe, as a gallant political leader whose works left an indelible mark, having served as the party’s second-highest member.
Mr Simuuwe made these remarks shortly after signing in the book of condolence when he led a team to pay their respects to the late Dr Banda at the funeral house in Lusaka today.
He emphasised that Dr Banda’s unique way of explaining Zambia’s political landscape, particularly in the manner the government was running at the time the UPND was in opposition, was truly remarkable.
“Whoever has served in that capacity, the history of the party does not divorce from such a person. So we will remember him and his contribution,” Mr Simuuwe stated.
Mr Simuuwe noted that Dr Banda will go in the history books as one who explained Zambia’s political phenomenon under his name pilgrim.
“His works will remain active for as long as UPND remains active,” he noted.
He further highlighted that Dr Banda will be both missed in the context of politics as well as a former Vice President of the UPND.
Speaking shortly after the UPND Media team visited the funeral house in Meanwood Ibex in Lusaka today, Uncle to the late, Fidelis Sakala, highlighted that the family has lost a pillar of the family who will be greatly missed by all.
Mr Sakala also mentioned that further details concerning the burial programme will soon be announced by the family.
