UPDATE: Tzaneen Muslim community condemns acid attack

TZANEEN –The Tzaneen Muslim Community has issued a statement condemningthe attack on a congregantfollowing prayers near Masjid us Salaam, confirming further details about the incident. According to the community, the attack occurred at around 21:40 on Friday, shortly after prayers had concluded. A male congregant was walking home, approximately 100 metres from the mosque, when he was allegedly attacked by four teenage boys.

The group reportedly threw improvised devices described as plastic water bottles containing a mixture of milk and chlorine. The attack was unprovoked, and the victim sustained injuries to his face and leg. He received medical treatment.

At the time of the incident, several worshippers were leaving the mosque. Community members pursued the suspects, resulting in one youth being cornered behind a gate, where he remained until police arrived roughly three hours later. The other suspects fled the scene.

The community expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as distressing and out of character for Tzaneen, a town known for peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance. Masjid us Salaam has operated alongside nearby churches and other places of worship for more than two decades without incident. While condemning the act of violence and any form of intimidation, the Tzaneen Muslim Community has urged residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement to complete its investigation.

The community reaffirmed its commitment to peace, respect and the rule of law, stating that there is no place for violence or intolerance in society.
