In a dramatic turn of events, High Court Justice Mzonde Mvula has granted Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda unconditional bail.

The ruling, delivered earlier today, marks a significant development in the case against Chimwendo Banda, who has been accused of attempting to murder Frank Chawanda in February 2021.

Chimwendo Banda’s lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, confirmed the development, stating that his client has been released from Maula Prison in Lilongwe, where he has been held since December 29, 2025.

The decision brings an end to a prolonged period of detention, as Chimwendo Banda was discharged from the hospital and immediately taken into custody.

The unconditional release raises questions about the strength of the prosecution’s case and the motivations behind the charges.

As the situation unfolds, Chimwendo Banda’s supporters are likely to hail the ruling as a victory, while the authorities may face scrutiny over their handling of the case.

The case has been closely watched by political observers, given Chimwendo Banda’s prominent position within the MCP.

The outcome of this case may have significant implications for the party and the broader Malawian political landscape.
