UK reaffirms support for Zambia’s democratic process, pledges continued backing for credible elections

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zambia’s democratic processes, with Rebecca Terzeon emphasizing the need for free, fair and credible elections. Reacting to President Hakainde Hichilema’s address to Parliament on values, morals and principles on Friday, Terzeon said the UK remained committed to working with Zambia to ensure a peaceful and democratic transition of power. “The UK is a steadfast advocate for Zambian democracy and we will continue to support the government, the institutions, and the people of Zambia in efforts to hold elections that credibly reflect the will of the Zambian nation,” she said.

“The UK’s support for Zambia’s democratic process is built on a foundation of mutual respect and trust. The UK does not favour one candidate or one party over another, that choice is the people of Zambia’s alone and is a matter on which we would never seek to interfere,” she said. The High Commissioner also underscored UK’s backing of inclusive development, citing support to Zambia’s education sector, including the Girls’ Education Programme, which she said has reached more than 70,000 children.

She commended Zambia’s progress in increasing school enrolment through the Education for All policy. “The UK is committed to supporting Zambia’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and reduce poverty,” she said.
