The British Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zambia with emergency social protection interventions whenever the country faced global economic shocks. British High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon, praised Zambia’s progress in strengthening its social protection systems, noting that the United Kingdom stood ready to assist efforts aimed at safeguarding poor and vulnerable households. Speaking during a meeting in Lusaka on Tuesday with Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba, Terzeon described Zambia’s current social protection architecture as “world-class,” saying it has been able to respond effectively and efficiently to emerging national needs.

“The UK Government is encouraged by the manner in which the Zambian Government, through the Ministry, has implemented various social protection programmes currently benefiting over 1.5 million households across the country,” she said. Terzeon added that Britain would not hesitate to provide emergency support should the country require cushioning for communities impacted by economic shocks. Meanwhile, Mwamba assured the High Commissioner that the Government was technically prepared to implement any additional support efficiently, stressing its commitment to protecting vulnerable families from socio-economic hardships.

She thanked the UK Government for being an “all-weather friend” and a key partner in Zambia’s broader socio-economic transformation agenda.
