The Midlands Wanderers Football Club has taken on two new promising players who aim to have their boots firmly on the field when it comes to the Premier Soccer League Betway Cup. Thebulihle Myeni and Mateo Horstead, both old boys of Maritzburg College, have officially begun their contracts with the club — marking an exciting new chapter in their football journeys. For Myeni, football has always been close to home.
“I was introduced to football by my father at the age of five and he has been my role model from a young age,” he said. The central and defensive midfielder said it was during his teenage years that he realised the sport could become more than just a passion. “It became clear when I started playing for my school team Maritzburg College and received interest from local clubs.
I realised I had potential and loved the game enough to pursue it full-time.” While he looks up to professional players such as Sipho Mbule and Themba Zwane, Myeni is quick to credit his father as his greatest inspiration. “Most importantly it was my dad who always motivated me and is my biggest supporter.” Calm and composed about reaching the professional stage, Myeni said he always believed this moment would come. I wasn’t so nervous about it because I knew it was always coming.
