Two people were killed and eight others injured in a head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and a light motor vehicle on the R33 outside Copesville on Tuesday morning. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service spokesperson, Craig Botha, said paramedics were dispatched to the scene at about 8:30 am following reports of a serious crash. Emergency responders found extensive damage to both vehicles and multiple casualties at the scene.

“Upon rapid assessment of the scene, emergency medical personnel confirmed the fatalities of two occupants from the hatchback,” Botha said. Both individuals had sustained injuries of such severity that they had sadly succumbed to their trauma before the arrival of emergency services. Attention then turned to the eight surviving patients.

Botha said two patients sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and required immediate advanced life support intervention. A further three patients suffered serious injuries and were stabilised on scene, while three others sustained minor injuries. A co-ordinated response involving KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, the fire department, police and several private and provincial ambulance services was required to manage the mass casualty incident. Patients were triaged, stabilised and extricated before being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
