Two suspects were killed in a shootout with police on Tuesday morning in Edendale. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that police were chasing the suspects in connection with the cash-in-transit robbery that happened in Verulam on Monday afternoon. The robbery left a trail of explosions, gunfire and a damaged security response vehicle as heavily armed suspects fled toward Inanda.

Earlier, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said it began receiving several calls from members of the public just before 1.30 pm reporting a robbery and loud explosions in the area. Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram, at the time, said officers were dispatched to the scene, where they were met with gunfire from what they believe were “spotters”. “On arrival, officers encountered heavily armed suspects believed to have been acting as spotters.

A shootout ensued, during which a Rusa response vehicle was struck by two bullets. “No injuries were reported. The suspects fled in two vehicles described as a white Toyota Cross and a white Toyota Corolla, and were travelling in the Inanda direction,” said Balram in a statement. Although no arrests were made, three firearms were later recovered during the aerial operation.
