FILE PHOTO: Inmates in custodySpread This NewsBy Staff ReporterA DARING escape was reported Saturday afternoon at St Thomas prison facility in Marondera, where two prisoners managed to break free from custody.According to sources, the two inmates from the ‘D Class’ classified as dangerous, scaled the perimetre fence and made good their escape in broad daylight around noon, just after a visit by friends and relatives raising fears of an inside job.Sources told NewZimbabwe.com. that one of the unidentified escapees was serving time for armed robbery while the other for rape.A thorough investigation is reportedly underway to determine circumstances surrounding the escape and identify potential lapses in security protocols. Reports say the wardens on duty were not vigilant, particularly considering that they were watching over ‘D Class’ inmates.ZPCS national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Meya KhanyeziZimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has reportedly launched a manhunt for the escapees although authorities have remained tight-lipped over the shocking daylight jail break.Efforts to get comment from Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi were fruitless by the time of publishing.The incident has sparked panic among Marondera residents, who were sending alerts on social media in the absence of official warning and appeal for vigilance from ZPCS itself.
