FILE PHOTO: Dagga Spread This NewsBy Staff Reporter THREE drug peddlers have been convicted by the Masvingo Magistrates Court for unlawful possession of 175 kilogrammes of dagga, with an estimated street value of US$22,000.The offenders, Ali Allan Mamudu (55), Khumbo Njima (45) and Lombikan Mwanandi (36) were busted in an anti-drug operation by the police on March 9, 2025.They were sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, of which three years were suspended for five years. They will each serve an effective nine years behind bars.Court heard that investigators got information that offenders were involved in dagga smuggling and using a bus enroute to Malawi.Detectives located the bus at Bulawayo turnoff in Masvingo after it had developed a mechanical fault. Upon arrival, police officers observed the trio transferring transparent plastic parcels containing dagga to a commuter omnibus.Upon noticing cops, two of the offenders fled the scene in a Volkswagen Polo, abandoning a significant portion of the dagga.The third offender was apprehended and after a search of the commuter omnibus, 17 plastic-wrapped parcels of dagga were recovered.The two fugitive suspects were later apprehended on March 11 this year in Harare and the getaway car was seized.In a statement following sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) noted that drug trafficking is destroying lives and communities across Zimbabwe.
