The Tonota mini stadium, currently under construction, is approximately 90 per cent complete, with the project expected to be finalised in May. Reporting on the progress of the project, council secretary for Tonota District Council, Mogomotsi Seemule revealed that completed infrastructure included five kiosks, a ticket booth, two changing rooms, an office block, canteen, and a boundary wall. She explained that water and electrical connections have been secured from Water Utilities Corporation and Botswana Power Corporation, respectively.

Ongoing works, Seemule explained, include water and electrical reticulation to buildings and pitch grading, with two contractors on site. She attributed delays in the implementation of the project to poor contractor performance, leading to contract terminations and re-procurement processes. The council secretary explained further that the total project budget was P6 million, with P4.9 million spent to date.

“The project, implemented by Tonota District Council, has engaged six contractors and 14 artisans, with two contractors and two artisans terminated due to non-performance,” she said. Upon completion, Seemule said the stadium would be handed over to the Ministry of Sport and Arts for management and maintenance. “The facility is expected to boost sports development and create economic opportunities through kiosk rentals and community activities,” said Seemule.ENDS
