United States of America (USA)-based musician Tiwonge Hango has written THE Censorship Board, expressing concern with the growing trend of explicit Artificial Intelligence (AI)- generated songs. Mhango, who is also a producer and is famed for tracks such as ‘Mama Africa’ and ‘Chinyengo’, said he is concerned about the impact such content may have on young people—especially children —if urgent measures are not put in place. “There is a collective responsibility to protect children from premature exposure to adult content and experiences that may be harmful to their moral, cultural, and psychological development,” he said.
Hango said the pursuit of online trends among some members of Generation Z had, in certain cases, led to a disregard for moral boundaries and societal values. “This raises serious questions about the direction in which our society is heading. It appears that some youths are either unaware of, or deliberately ignoring, the existence and role of the Censorship Board of Malawi,” Hango said.
The musician said, without proper regulation and enforcement, the country risked creating an environment where anything goes. “One can only imagine the level of disorder that would exist in a country without institutions such as the Malawi Police Service or regulatory authorities,” he said. Mhango has since appealed to the board to intervene by developing strategies to educate young people on responsible content creation.

Mhango said the industry was growing and that several artists were offering good music. He also appreciated the work of producers for their exceptional work in creating good sound. Deputy Director of Arts responsible for Censorship Anganile Nthakomwa confirmed the development.
