A WOMAN and her daughter, who appeared on Tilder Moyo’s radio show on StarFM on Tuesday night, have been arrested for allegedly abusing eight children. Gogo Sibongile and her daughter Shantel were detained while attempting to receive cash for school fees they claimed was needed by ‘two minors in their custody.’ Tuesday night and claimed she needed money to help pay for the school fees of the kids who were under her care. However, Tilder began to suspect irregularities in Shantel’s story.
She requested that she should bring her mother, along with their national identity documents, the following day. The investigations revealed that the pair had been exploiting a number of minors, who were begging for money along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare, for some time. Authorities found out that Shantel and Gogo Sibongile also had fake national identity documents.
“I became suspicious when Shantel struggled to consistently explain how she came to be responsible for the children she claimed needed school fees,” Tilder said. “When I asked for her name, she stammered, and upon checking with the Registrar General’s Office, I discovered she had a different name. “Additionally, she shared the same national identity number with her mother, prompting me to alert the police.

“I couldn’t let her go, especially when she failed to provide satisfactory answers about the minors, who were left exposed on the streets.” Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza could not be reached for comment. However, sources told H-Metro the two women were taken to Harare Central Police Station. A local church was duped by the duo when it provided assistance for the minors only for the two to take all the donations.
