Three suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with police in Newlands West on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said officers from Newlands East were responding to a complaint of business robbery in the Honeyrich area when they received information that a tavern owner had been held at gunpoint while locking up. According to Magwaza, five men approached the owner, robbed him of cellphones, alcohol and an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in a white Toyota Etios.
Police officers conducted patrols looking for the suspects, and they spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the one involved in a business robbery. The members activated their sirens and blue lights with the intention of stopping the vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop. “Police officers gave chase after a short while the suspects’ vehicle came to an abrupt stop.
The occupants alighted from the vehicle and began firing shots towards the police. In defense of their lives, police returned fire, and in the process, three suspects were fatally wounded, whilst two of them fled into the bush,” he said. He added that police recovered a 9mm pistol, cellphones, bottles of alcohol as well as an undisclosed amount of money.
