Three people were killed in a crash involving a fuel tanker that led to the closure of the N3 northbound near the Frere Interchange in KwaZulu-Natal ,on Tuesday morning. According to the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the collision occurred at about 11am on the N3, just north of the Frere Interchange, between Estcourt and the Tugela River. A fuel tanker and a light motor vehicle were involved in the crash.

“The entire northbound carriageway is currently closed to traffic,” N3TC said in a traffic alert. Emergency and road incident management teams are on scene, with stringent safety measures in place due to the risks posed by the tanker’s highly flammable cargo. “The severity of the crash and the risks associated with the highly flammable cargo require even more stringent control on scene than usual,” N3TC said.

Motorists have been warned to expect extensive delays and heavy congestion in the area while recovery and clean-up operations are carried out. Road users have also been urged to approach the scene with extreme caution and to follow all instructions issued by officials from the road incident management system. IPSS Medical Rescue has also responded to the scene.

Spokesperson Samantha Meyrick said three people died. “There is one critically injured patient who is currently under the care of IPSS Medical Rescue advanced life support paramedics,” Meyrick said. She urged motorists travelling in the area to exercise caution. Emergency services remain on site as investigations continue and efforts are underway to stabilise the scene and reopen the affected section of the highway.
