The human cost of the war in Sudan, three years on

It has been three years since civil war erupted in Sudan – leading to what is considered the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The conflict has seen human suffering on a huge scale, with 65% of the population in need of food, water, shelter and medicine. Thousands of people have been killed, and millions forcibly displaced.

World diplomacy has had little success in bringing the war to an end. DR Congo are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, with fans in Kinshasa celebrating the team’s 1-0 play-off win over Jamaica. Lava from the Piton de la Fournaise volcano reached the Indian ocean for the first time in 19 years.
