The Kingdom of Morocco and its Atlas Lions, runners-up in the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Morocco, emerged victorious from this continental competition. According to several observers, Morocco has been internationally recognized as a resounding success, given its flawless organization, the warm welcome extended to the teams and their supporters, and the expertise demonstrated in terms of security. In this regard, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, emphasized on January 17, 2026, that “the quality of the stadiums, infrastructure, and facilities at this edition is world-class.” For his part, FIFA Secretary General Matthias Grafström praised “an exciting competition of a very high standard, both organizationally and in terms of sporting achievement.” During this event, His Majesty the King of Morocco called for the establishment of a modern and effective regulatory framework based primarily on restructuring the national sports landscape and upgrading sports organizations with a view to their professionalization, as well as democratizing the bodies responsible for their management.

The Sovereign also called for revitalizing sports participation in the Kingdom’s cities, towns, and neighborhoods, especially working-class areas, which represent an inexhaustible pool of athletes for Morocco. This Royal Vision has thus materialized through a massive investments in sports infrastructure such as the creation of the Mohammed VI Football Academy, which has produced numerous talented athletes, the proliferation of local sports fields throughout the Kingdom, and massive investments in youth development. The organization of the 35th edition of AFCON is as a result presented as a showcase, intended to demonstrate Morocco’s ability to host major international events particularly in the run-up to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Football has therefore become a tool of institutional credibility and diplomatic outreach. The AFCON final was graced by the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, who represented His Majesty the King of Morocco. Other prominent African figures also participated in this event, including the President of Rwanda and the President of the African Union Commission, who came to celebrate this 35th edition of the AFCON as part of private visits.
