The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says businessman Hangwani Maumela, a nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is the alleged central mastermind behind the looting of more than R2 billion at Tembisa Hospital, is yet to be charged. Despite the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) linking more than R800 million to a network of front companies and successfully freezing around R325m in assets, the controversial businessman allegedly at the center of the Tembisa Hospital scandal, Hangwani Maumela, has not been criminally charged. The SIU uncovered a massive tender fraud syndicate at Tembisa Hospital where over R2 billion was allegedly looted via irregular contracts.
Maumela, who isrelatedto President Cyril Ramaphosa through a previous marriage, was identified as a central figure in this network. The investigation revealed he used a vast network of over 40 proxy and front companies to secure inflated contracts for medical consumables, catering and cleaning services by bypassing standard procurement procedures. This investigation resulted in theseizure and preservationof vast assets belonging to him, as well as multiple luxury vehicles connected to his sprawling network. Authorities confiscated multiple luxury supercars (including Lamborghinis, a Bentley, and Aston Martins), a $1.9 million boat, and sprawling mansions in Sandton, Bantry Bay (Cape Town), Ballito, and Pecanwood Estate.
