Senior officials from Meta Platforms and TikTok have arrived in Malawi for high-level engagements with local digital content creators. The meeting took place on Thursday at the Bingu International Convention Centre in the capital, Lilongwe, and focused on opportunities and challenges within the country’s growing digital content space. A senior MACRA official, Limbani Nsapato, revealed that at least 1,900 content creators registered interest in attending the engagement.

However, only selected participants have received official invitations due to limited capacity. The meeting comes amid growing calls from Malawian creators for access to monetisation opportunities on major digital platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. Currently, most local creators are unable to earn revenue directly from their content, as monetisation programmes are not fully available in Malawi.

As a result, many resort to registering accounts in foreign countries where such features are active in order to generate income. The engagement is expected to provide a platform for dialogue on expanding monetisation access, supporting local creators, and strengthening the country’s digital economy.
